Alabama Building Construction (Commercial) License Information

Services:
Building Construction: Shall include the construction of building structures, including modifications thereof or additions thereto, intended for use for shelter, protection, comfort or convenience. Building construction shall include the excavation and foundations for buildings and work incidental thereto.
Requirements:
*Licensure will be required for the practice of contracting in Alabama for any contract is $50,000 or more.
*Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the examination.
*The Alabama Business and Law exam is also required to be passed to obtain your contractor’s license.
*Applicants must submit verification of 3 years experience and a financial statement.
*Applicants must have a minimum of net worth and working capital of $10,000 in order to qualify for the lowest bid limit classification.
A - Not to exceed $100,000.00
B - Not to exceed $250,000.00
C - Not to exceed $500,000.00
D - Not to exceed $1,000,000.00
E - Not to exceed $3,000,000.00

Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors Testing Process:
1. Candidates seeking licensure contact the State for a license application must complete license application and submit to the State.
2. State notifies PSI of the candidates eligible for testing. PSI notifies the candidates of their eligibility for testing and provides candidates with test registration and scheduling information. Each approved application will be valid for a period of one year from the date PSI receives the eligibility list from the State. If for any reason you do not receive information by e-mail or regular mail, you may contact psi at 1-800-733-9267 or visit there website at www.psiexams.com
3. Candidates register with PSI by paying their test fees. The fee for each test is $96. (Contractor candidates must pay for and take a business management exam) Fees can be paid by check, or credit card. Those paying by credit card can register over the telephone or on the Internet.
4. Candidates take their tests at any of the four existing PSI testing locations found in Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham or Huntsville. You need to bring in a government issued photo ID in order to verify their identity prior to the testing session. Candidates will have their picture taken at the exam site and will provide PSI a signature by signing the test center log.
5. Upon completion of the test, score reports will be given to each candidate. Passing candidates will receive a passing letter.
6. Passing candidates submit the successful score reports to the State.
7. The State will mail out licenses to those candidates that have taken and passed the exam and which have had their applications reviewed and approved by the board.
