Alabama Home Builders License Information


RESIDENTIAL HOME BUILDER. One who constructs a residence or structure for sale or who, for a fixed price, commission, fee, or wage, undertakes or offers to undertake the construction or superintending of the construction, or who manages, supervises, assists, or provides consultation to a homeowner regarding the construction or superintending of the construction, of any residence or structure which is not over three floors in height and which does not have more than four units in an apartment complex, or the repair, improvement, or reimprovement thereof, to be used by another as a residence when the cost of the undertaking exceeds ten thousand dollars ($10,000). Nothing herein shall prevent any person from performing these acts on his or her own residence or on his or her other real estate holdings. Anyone who engages or offers to engage in such undertaking in this state shall be deemed to have engaged in the business of residential home building.

Requirements: 

- Licensure will be required for the practice of residential Home Building and Remodeling where contracts exceed $10,000.

- Application fees must be submitted with your application as well as a credit report.

- Pre-approval from the state is not required to sit for the examination.

- The Alabama Business and Law is part of the examination, not a separate exam.

Alabama Home Builders Testing Process:

1.  To apply, contact the state of Alabama at 1-334-242-2230 or complete the application online at http://www.hblb.alabama.gov/Default.aspx       

2.  Candidates must complete the appropriate examination application with PSI Exams and take their test at any of the PSI testing locations found in the Candidate Information Bulletin  from PSI (www.psiexams.com)   1-800-733-9267.

3.   Once you pass, PSI will submit your score sheet to the Licensing Board. It is helpful to have your license application completed and submitted for approval to ensure receiving your license the fastest.

About the Exam              

The Alabama Residential Contractor Exam has 80 questions and a time limit of 240 minutes.  A 67.5% is required to pass.  Topics on the exam include sitework, footings and foundations;  concrete and concrete reinforcement; masonry; carpentry; roofing; associated trades; drywall;  Codes, estimating and plan reading, and business law and project management items such as financials, leins, contracts, business organization, payroll and taxes.

·         Code of Fed Regulations OSHA 29 CFR 1926

·         Carpentry and Building Construction, 2004

·         Modern Masonry

·         The Contractors Guide to Quality Concrete Construction, 1998

·         Pipe and Excavation Contracting, 1987

·         Guide to Good Practice for Handling, Installing, Restraining, and Bracing of Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses, 2006.

·         Alabama, Residential Builders Guide to Business, Law and Project Management, 6th Edition, NASCLA

NOTE: DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING, ANYWHERE IN YOUR BOOKS! The exam proctor will check your books prior to going to your testing station and will check them again when you are done with the exam. Only use approved tabs per the PSI Candidate Information Bulletin.
