NASCLA Accredited Contractor License Exam
The NASCLA Accredited contractor examination was created to improve the quality of construction examinations and enable the mobility of contractors across jurisdictions This is the first major step towards a national contractors license exam. Applicants take accredited examinations in addition to meeting other licensure requirements. Several states now accept this NASCLA Accredited examination as meeting the trade examination requirement for Commercial Contractors. These states include:
- Georgia
- Alabama
- South Carolina
- North Carolina
- Mississippi
- Tennessee
- Louisiana
- Arkansas
Some states administer the exam. Others just accept it via reciprocating agreements. Be sure to check with your license board for details.
The Testing providers send the scores to a national examination database that the Applicants and states can access for examination results.
The NASCLA Accredited exam is an open book, non-code focused exam. There are 115 multiple choice questions with a time limit of 330 minutes. A 70% (81 correct) is required to pass. The general content breakdown of the exam is as follows: (source: www.NASCLA.org)
20% - Estimating, Bidding, and Preconstruction Services—The process of selecting, analyzing, pricing, and procuring public and private commercial and institutional construction projects. This may include the estimating of costs related to labor, materials, equipment, subcontracts, and other associated costs required to construct a project.
24% - Project Management—After execution of contract documents, the ongoing activities required of the contractor to deliver the project on time, within budget, and in accordance with the contract documents.
28% - Project Construction—Execution of the work as described in the contract documents.
8% - Project Closeout—The process of finalizing the contractual obligations of the contractor in order to complete the contract and receive final payment.
20% - Organizational and Financial Management —The general business operations of a construction company, and the management of its human and financial resources, to ensure its ongoing viability.
