Alabama separates their commercial and residential licenses from one another. For commercial work, you have the General Contractor license (NASCLA) and the Under Four Stories license. For residential work, you have the Home Builder license.

A contractor's license is required for commercial work over $50,000 and for residential work over $10,000


Alabama General Contractor (NASCLA)

The Alabama General Contractor's license allows the builder to bid on, build, or modify any type or size of commercial structure in Alabama.

There are two required exams: the NASCLA commercial trades exam and the Alabama Commercial Business Law exam. Once you pass the NASCLA exam, your passing score can also be used in other states to get commercial GC licenses. For a current list of states that accept NASCLA: Click Here

Alabama Home Builder/Residential Contractor

The Alabama Home Builder License allows for residential construction from the ground up, as well as remodeling existing residential properties.

There are two required exams: the Alabama Home Builder trades exam and the Alabama Residential Business Law exam.

Alabama Under Four Stories Contractor

The Alabama Under Four Stories license allows the builder to bid on, build, or modify commercial structures that are not over 3 stories in height.
