State Requirements & Application

Requirements: *Any prime contractor or sub contractor working on projects where the cost of labor and materials is more than $2,500 is required to have the appropriate license.

* Only the General Contractor license has a minimum net worth requirement. The minimum net worth for a GC unlimited is $150,000 and a GC Limited Tier must have a minimum net worth of $25,000. The limited tier license is only for contracts $500,000 or less.

* The General Contractor must have at least $500,000 worth of general liability insurance.

* Must have at least four years of proven active experience, or a four degree in engineering, architecture, or construction management.

Fees: The application fee for a new prime contractor license is $300. The renewal fee is $200. The application fee for a subcontractor is $150. To obtain a license application and other forms for Georgia go to Application

Veteran Preference: Veterans who served during war time or who have permanent disability may qualify for up to 10 Veteran Preference points. Contact the board to see if you qualify.

Specialty Contractors: Certain specialty contractors do not need a license. This document lists specialties which do not require a license. Specialty Contractors

Applicants must also pass a separate exam on Business Law and Project Management for Georgia.



Georgia has established reciprocity with Louisiana, and Tennessee. You must hold a commercial license with a classification of "building construction" and have obtained the license by examination in order to qualify.The NASCLA exam serves as your trades exam in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, U.S. Virgin Islands, West Virginia.

With this license you may bid on and build all types of buildings in GA. Residential and Commercial work permitted.
