State Requirements & Application

* License will be required for the practice of contracting in South Carolina. 

* You must complete the test before applying for the South Carolina license.

* Application fees must be submitted with your application as well as a financial statement, passing test scores, and experience affidavit.

* The South Carolina Business and Law exam is required.

The following financial statement requirements apply to initial applications:

Groups 1 and 2 - Submit a "self-prepared" financial statement - must be signed and notarized. You may generate a balance sheet from your accounting software or obtain a form from a bank. Call (888) 269-7646, and request document #172.

Limit Group 1 - $50,000, Net Worth Requirement - $10,000
Limit Group 2 - $200,000, Net Worth Requirement - $40,000

Group 3 - Submit a “compiled” financial statement prepared by a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Licensed Public Accountant (LPA). The financial statement must include a signed cover letter from the CPA or LPA stating it was “compiled”. It must be prepared in accordance with SSARS including all disclosures required by GAAP.

Limit Group 3 - $500,000, Net Worth Requirement - $100,000

Surety Bonds: Beginning with this renewal cycle, the South Carolina Contractor's Licensing Board can now accept a surety bond in lieu of a financial statement for both renewals and initial applications. Basically, an applicant can provide a surety bond in the amount of two (2) times the net worth requirement for the Group Level applied for. For example a General Contractor Group 5 would require a surety bond in the amount of $500,000.


Experience Requirements 
To be eligible to obtain the license you must pass a technical exam and the business and law exam. You must also be able to document 2 years of experience within the last 5 years in the classification of work for which you are applying.

The NASCLA exam serves as your trades exam in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, West Virginia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
